New podcast spotlights clinicians taking unconventional career paths

Out of Programme, a new podcast hosted by Clinical Entrepreneur Dr Jing Ouyang, launched earlier this year to highlight the career journeys of clinicians who have stepped outside traditional training pathways.

The series features in-depth interviews with doctors and healthcare professionals who have built unusual and unconventional careers—across entrepreneurship, health tech, policy, design, education and the creative industries. Many guests are part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, including mentors such as Mr Iain Hennessey, Liz Ashall-Payne and Dr Vernon Bainton.

While the podcast explores alternative career paths, it also delves into the emotional realities behind them – navigating tough decisions, trade-offs, uncertainty and even failure. Through candid and reflective conversations, Out of Programme reveals how clinicians are redefining what it means to have impact, beyond traditional clinical roles.

For anyone thinking about starting their own venture, these behind-the-scenes stories offer honest insights into the messy, non-linear journeys that often lie beneath polished success. The podcast aims to offer honest conversations around professional identity, career pivots, and redefining what it means to be a doctor today. Out of Programme is available on all major platforms including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, with behind-the-scenes updates on Substack.

Dr Ouyang is currently recording new episodes and welcomes expressions of interest from across the CEP network.
