Dr Angus Perry is a GP and founder of GeneralPractice.AI, who enrolled onto the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, as part of our Scottish cohort in 2023.
Launched in 2023, GeneralPractice.AI, is an advanced primary care platform with over 50 unique applications, encompassing AI powered clinical tools, clinical navigation, practice management, and administrative tasks. The platform aims to infuse artificial intelligence into general practice and primary care to improve the overall healthcare experience.
‘GeneralPractice.AI aims to revolutionise primary care by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence.’
Dr Angus Perry graduated from the University of Southampton in 2014, and then trained at the Oxford Deanery before becoming a GP in 2019. Upon relocating from Portsmouth to Scotland, he immersed himself in understanding the nuances of primary care systems. His expertise led him to explore ways to enhance these systems, igniting a passion for innovation and improvement within healthcare.
As a local GP in Scotland, Dr Perry found that each practice had very different ways of working. This resulted in the common challenge that the onboarding process of new staff was cumbersome and took weeks for each individual to fully adjust and integrate into their roles. Traditionally, most surgeries relied on paper-based information packs which contained essential details about practice procedures, patient management, and administrative tasks but Dr Perry saw an opportunity for improvement. He envisioned a centralised solution that would simplify the onboarding experience and created an app that consolidated all critical information in one place. This digital hub allowed practices to update on-boarding and practice specific information easily and was accessible to use.
Motivated by staff acclaim, Dr Perry enhanced the app with new features and began to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could support its further development.
Dr Perry leveraged large language models (LLM*)—a sophisticated deep-learning algorithm—to build the impact of the platform. Through this integration with AI, the system transformed into an assistant, supporting essential tasks across various roles within Primary Care.
The platform’s core features include an AI practice management tool that seamlessly integrates with everyday surgery support such as the Pharmacy Hub, Practice Policy, and Duty Doctor Guide. Additionally, there’s an AI-driven suite supporting tasks including writing referral letters, supporting the diagnosis of complex conditions, creating exercise prescriptions, and developing comprehensive mental health plans. Furthermore, the platform offers an AI educational platform for medical professionals, providing unlimited up-to-date question banks tailored for medical exams, an extensive A-Z library of resources covering diverse medical topics, and a continuous personal development (CPD) hub.
In addition, GeneralPractice.AI has a GP Management Plan feature which enables healthcare professionals to create personalised care plans for patients with chronic illnesses in minutes. These plans leverage local resources available to the patient and incorporate signposting to cutting-edge research. The platform assists in developing comprehensive care strategies that cover medication management, lifestyle adjustments, and follow-up schedules, ensuring a holistic and up-to-date approach to patient care. This tool aims to streamline the process, allowing GPs to provide consistent, high-quality care and improve patient outcomes efficiently.
These AI-driven tools aim to benefit all healthcare professionals in Primary Care, from reception teams to practice nurses, GPs, and healthcare assistants. Their goal is to enhance decision-making, improve efficiency in healthcare delivery, and revolutionise the way practices operate for the future.
Dr Perry then delved further into the challenges faced by Primary Care professionals and created the GeneralPractice.AI patient app, My Lifestyle Hub. This secondary app allows any GP surgery to develop a customised application tailored to their patients’ specific needs, regardless of population size. The app provides signposting, surgery information, and allows the patient to directly engage with the resources through the app.
“The GeneralPractice.AI patient app addresses a secondary issue I encountered: the lack of effective signposting. During clinician consultations, time is restricted, and patients often struggle to retain all the necessary information. For instance, when someone receives a diagnosis like hypertension, conveying essential details becomes challenging within these short time frames. The app solves this problem by providing patients with a centralized platform to explore guidance, resources, and local information, making it easier for them to manage their condition.”

A key feature of the patient app is the ‘My Lifestyle Hub’, aimed at supporting patients to live happier and healthier lives. It offers features for appointment management, access to resources, exercise guidance, sleep support, addiction assistance, dietary information, community support and more. A key component is the ‘Cancer Prevention Toolkit,’ which empowers patients to understand their cancer risk factors and take proactive steps toward prevention, aligning with the NHS Long Term Plan.
Dr Perry’s clinic in Scotland is currently trialling the AI-powered app and early feedback has been positive. General practitioners appreciate the AI features for supporting consultations, while the reception team have found the signposting features beneficial in guiding patients to the right support.
“The NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme has given me inspiration, knowledge and great contacts.”- Dr Angus Perry.
The NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme has empowered Dr Perry’s entrepreneurial journey by connecting him with a supportive network of inspiring innovators and subject matter experts. Through valuable collaboration opportunities, educational sessions and expert guidance from his mentor, the programme has supported his personal and innovative growth.
“One of the most valuable aspects of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme is its networking opportunities. It’s truly remarkable how the programme has fostered a supportive culture and ecosystem, where individuals consistently go above and beyond to help one another. Personally, I am grateful for the in-person, virtual and local sessions, which have provided me with insights into various aspects of running a business and being an effective leader.
The 1:1 business planning sessions have been helpful and the feedback I have received allowed me to refine my business strategy and better prepare for the future. Moreover, the educational events organised by the programme have enabled me to connect with exceptional individuals including fellow Clinical Entrepreneur Yasmin Karsan, a pharmacist who introduced me to the field of clinical safety. Through this introduction, we are now collaborating to enhance the GP.AI app.
I must also acknowledge my mentor, Dr David Cox, whose guidance has been pivotal in enhancing my innovative thinking. His advice and encouragement has steered me in the right direction, ultimately saving me valuable time and preventing mistakes.”

Looking to the future
The GeneralPractice.AI app is currently being trialled in Australia, and Dr Perry hopes to swiftly implement it further across multiple surgeries to expand its impact. In the UK, the focus is on regulatory compliance, particularly clinical safety and once the app is complete, Dr Perry intends to collaborate with NHS Highlands to promote widespread adoption.
“I aspire to expand the reach of GeneralPractice.AI at scale, equipping surgeries
